Text Box: “Preparing for success is an internal process.” - Former Canton City Councilman, Edward “Peel” Coleman was a man for all people—rich or poor, black or white. Peel Coleman loved the City of Canton and devoted most of his life to serving its citizens. Peel Coleman believed that preparing for success was an internal process, not external and that “hard work plus honesty and commitment equaled opportunity.”
Peel believed in empowerment not entitlement and was adamant about working hard, community involvement and getting a good education and then reaching out as far as one could.
In an effort to continue Peel Coleman’s legacy to assist people of all walks of life and to provide opportunities that give people dignity and promote personal responsibility, the Peel Coleman Community Collaborative Fund was established in 2001. One of the objective of the fund is to provide resources that promote higher learning, community involvement and public service.
The Peel Coleman Scholarship is offered annually to a deserving student in their senior year at either Canton McKinley or Canton Timken High School. Other eligibility requirements include:
The student has to have applied and are going to college
Have a 3.0 or better grade point average
Show evidence of community involvement and a good work ethic.
